We are looking for highly motivated PhD students who are interested in innovative research to cure HIV-1. You need to be able to work in a multidisciplinary team and have affinity/experience with molecular virology and/or immunology.
You will participate in a multidisciplinary research collaboration that aims to identify the molecular signature of the HIV-1 reservoir in order to develop innovative biologicals to eliminate the reservoir.
You will use innovative immunological methods to identify latent infected HIV-1 cells and determine the signature by single cell sequencing. You will develop specific engineered antibodies to target and eradicate the HIV-1 infected cells. Moreover, genetic CRISPR-CAS approaches can also be used to remove HIV-1 integrated genome from cells. You will investigate the efficacy of the method in vitro and using both in vivo humanized mice and ex vivo patient models.
The Target2Cure research is a collaboration between different research groups within the Amsterdam UMC (location AMC) and UMC Utrecht. There are two PhD student positions within the Amsterdam UMC and one postdoctoral position in UMC Utrecht.
We are looking for PhD student candidates with a Masters in Biomedical sciences or equivalent studies and experience in virology and/or immunology is preferred.
You should have the ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team.
This exciting HIV-1 Cure program is a new research collaboration between researchers from the Department of Experimental Immunology (Dr. Ribeiro, Dr. Kootstra, Prof. Geijtenbeek,) and Experimental Virology (Prof. Sanders, Dr. Van Gils, Dr. Pasternak, Prof Berkhout) at the Amsterdam UMC, and Medical Microbiology (Dr. Nijhuis) at the UMC Utrecht.
PhD students will work individually on different aspects of the research program but collaborate within work packages together with postdocs.

• The maximum gross monthly salary based on a 36-hour work week is € 3.103,- (scale 21 CAO UMC).
