What you are going to do

At the Center of Immunodeficiencies Amsterdam (CIDA), the immunodeficiency group of Prof Kuijpers has a longstanding role in deciphering pathological processes related to immunodeficiencies of diverse background. B cell pathology is the largest group of rare immunodeficiency disorders affecting leukocyte functioning, of which Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID) is the most common acquired defect in pediatric and adult patients. Remarkable is the fact that some of the cases are caused by mono-genetic aberrations and hence can be considered congenital of nature developing over time. What makes these immunodeficiencies so variable, what drives to defects to become overt, and can we predict the course and development of such B cell disorders by more detailed studies? These and other questions will be addressed in this project in the light of clinical antibody substitution, diagnostics, and basic understanding of plasma cell generation.

We are looking for a motivated PhD student who has been trained in cellular culture and molecular techniques (preferred background in (molecular) biology or medical life sciences), who is willing to join our research team and work at the AMC to investigate B cell biology in the light of rare immunodeficiency syndromes in a collaborative effort with state-of-the-art technological approaches. We are looking for an enthusiastic and flexible PhD student with experience and great interest in immunology to work on a project dedicated to B cell immunology and clinical IgG substitution. Together with collaborators at SANQUIN and the VUMC we aim to gain disease-overarching insight in B cell biology related to primary B cell activation, differentiation and plasma cell development. In this way we aim to develop therapeutics to improve or modulate immune function. In Amsterdam, we will further develop and apply an immunological toolbox to approach rare immunological diseases by iPSC technology, transcriptomics and mass spectometry on selected T and B cell subsets. The PhD student will work in a small dedicated team focusing on the basic mechanisms of immune processes regarding antibody formation. The project will include the analysis of different types of blood cells in various B cell-related defects, having material from patients available for in-depth analysis. This project is performed in close collaboration with various our immunological partners in the Amsterdam arena.

What we expect from you

Prerequisites are as follows:

  • Master of Science degree in Biology, Medical Biology or equivalent;
  • significant experience with immunological and cell biological techniques;
  • a creative and flexible work attitude;
  • a team player with excellent communication skills;
  • the capacity to work independently.

Where you are going to work

In the current project the research groups, Prof. dr. T.W. Kuijpers (Dept. of Pediatric immunology, Rheumatology & Infectious Diseases), Dr G.J. de Bree (Dept of Clinical Immunology)and Dr E.M. van Leeuwen (Dept of Experimental Immunology) at the Amsterdam UMC join forces. The complementary knowledge and technologies of this project team will create a unique scientific environment and strong research base for the PhD student. Within the Dept. of Experimental Immunology both fundamental and clinical research is performed with a focus on immunity during infections, inflammatory disorders and autoimmunity. The clinical background in both the Dept. of Pediatric Immunology, Rheumatology and Infectious Disease and the Dept of (Adult) Clinical Immunology will result in a high degree of synergy for innovative translational research.

  • The maximum gross monthly salary based on a 36-hour work week is € 3.103,- (scale OIO CAO UMC).
  • The base salary does not include holiday pay (8%) and a year-end bonus (8.3%).
