Postdoc Quantitative analysis of genomic instability and immune response in cancers

Apply before: 31 January 2021
Working time: Day
Working hours: 36 hours per week
Discipline: AMC Medical Research (AMR)

What you are going to do

Immune cells in the microenvironment of cancers impact the response to therapies and patient survival. The goal of this project is to decipher why some cancers are infiltrated by immune cells and others not. We will interrogate genomic databases and develop new quantitative techniques to elucidate the genomic foundations of immune infiltrate in cancers, with the ultimate goal to improve the survival of cancer patients. Handling large datasets, developing innovative approaches to analyze the data and communicating with medical doctors to interpret results are vital aspects of this project.

What we expect from you

The ideal candidate therefore holds a PhD in physics with interest in data analysis or a PhD in bioinformatics with proven experience in method development. Furthermore, we are looking for: 1) Excellent programming skills, preferably in MATLAB and R. 2) Interest in genomics and oncology. 3) A collaborative mindset and good social skills. 4) Ambition to perform high quality and high impact research.

Where you are going to work

This project is a collaboration between the groups of Dr. Daniël Miedema from the laboratory of experimental oncology and Dr. Sarah Derks from the department of medical oncology. The laboratory of experimental oncology hosts around 40 PhD students and postdocs of various backgrounds (biomedical, medical, bioinformatics and physics). The department of medical oncology of the Amsterdam UMC is a leading center for cancer care in The Netherlands. Over the last few years we created a unique environment within the Cancer Center Amsterdam for interdisciplinary research to study cancers by large amounts of quantitative data.
