We are looking for a molecularly trained molecular biologist with ample experience in animal studies (in mice and preferably other species) and an affinity for working with viral pathogens. He/she will coordinate animal studies with scientists from the Laboratory of Experimental Virology (LEV) within the Department of Medical Microbiology. The candidate should primarily interact intensively with researchers who have developed novel antiviral strategies for setting up the appropriate tests in pre-clinical animal models. There is also room for establishing his/her own research line in close interaction with the Principal Investigators of LEV.
The candidate should have a PhD in molecular biology or flanking disciplines with affinity for virology and microbiology. Also, ample experience with experimentation in animal models and holding a diploma in accordance with Article 9 of the Dutch Experiments on Animals Act (Art. 9 WoD) are required, as well as the ability to write permits (e.g. DEC protocols) for work with pathogenic viruses, some modified by recombinant DNA technology, in Biosafety laboratories (ML-III and DM-III facility). Good interpersonal skills to translate selected PI-project towards in vivo experimentation, but also to interact with other Departments within Amsterdam UMC (e.g. the HIS mouse facility). Ambition to set up a side research project, which needs to be boosted by applying for outside funding (e.g. to supplement the salary to 1.0 fte).
LEV performs fundamental and applied research on human viruses, currently mostly on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), but also other pathogens. Future HIV research will focus on curing HIV. Experimentation in appropriate in vivo models is required for dissection of the HIV reservoir, but also for testing the safety and efficacy of novel therapeutic strategies we are developing. The researcher will report to the Head of LEV, but will closely interact with all other Principal Investigators.
Our energetic and internationally oriented laboratory has recently published innovative antiviral approaches ranging from RNAi and CRISPR-Cas and has developed novel vaccine strategies, for which we need your help to make the next step towards future implementation of these antiviral strategies in humans.
